Dinosaur National Monument
Green River & Yampa River
Dinosaur National Monument is a legacy of rivers-from the ancient river where dinosaurs once roamed to the present day Green and Yampa Rivers. The rock layer enclosing the fossils is a sandstone and conglomerate bed or river bed origin known as the Morrison Formation from the Jurassic Period some 150 million years old. The dinosaurs and other ancient animals were washed into the area and buried presumably during flooding events.
The Green River cuts through the middle of Dinosaur National Monument. Gates of Lodore canyon is an upper stretch of the Green River starting out in the Rocky Mountains winding into rugged dessert canyons. Exciting whitewater everyday paired with breathtaking hikes.
The Yampa River is a tributary of the Green river and is 250 miles long entirely in the National Monument. This beautiful river flows through the fossil-rich, Jurassic-era canyon starting in Colorado flowing west connecting with the Green River just before the UT boarder. The Yampa River has stunning 2000-foot high white canyon walls with black tiger stripes. Spectacular side canyons containing prehistoric rock art and historical abandoned caves.
