Whitewater School

As we gear up for the season, we're getting ready for our annual Whitewater School trip, where our guests can learn many of the ins and outs of whitewater rafting, from packing the boats to maneuvering an 18 foot raft through the rapids.  We welcome all skill levels on these trips and we always have a great time!

We just received a letter from one of our past Whitewater School participants that we would love to share:

Brenda-

I took your guide training course back in 2005(?), hopefully you will remember me as you probably don't have too many jolly, gray-haired geology professors in those courses.  I had aspirations of becoming a real river runner and just wanted to report that I have managed to do just that...Last year Tracey (my wife) and I got to do a private [Grand Canyon] trip, we did a full 19 days to Pearce Ferry.  I was asked to run lead boat the whole trip, it was a really different not looking at the back of some one else's boat all day!  It was a really nice trip run on high water which acutally might it easier over all.

A few years ago we bought a used 14 ft cataraft and have been running Deso almost every year.  I have been thinking of running Westwater down through the Moab Daily some time (that was the run on our 2005 training trip), but always seem to end up at Deso (I rather like Deso). I'd really like to do a trip through Cataract. Would likely try a low water trip as I have never even seen Cataract but what the hell you only live once!

While I have learned much of my river running skills from my [Grand Canyon] guide buddies, every time I launch on a trip I think back to that SGE training trip. I learned some important things on that trip, not just boating skills (I do remember you telling me to keep my eyes downstream and plan ahead), but how to give our guests a good experience. FYI - we always do a dress up night on our private trips, I learned that from your folks too!  I guess I just wanted to say thanks for getting me started...I don't get to Moab very often but will look you up next time I'm there.

Cheers,

Rod Metcalf (or as I'm sometimes called in GC, Doc Swampy)
